Matthew 6:5-9 NLT
“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray
publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where
everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward
they will ever get.
6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind
you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who
sees everything, will reward you.
7 “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do.
They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their
words again and again. 8 Don’t be like them, for your Father
knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! 9 Pray
like this…”
Luke 11:1 NLT
“Lord, teach us to pray.”
Matthew 6:9-13 KJV
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy
kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and
the glory, for ever. Amen.

  1. The PATERNITY of Prayer – “Our Father which art in
    heaven.”
  • Prayer is RELATIONSHIP based.

Romans 8:15 NLT
“So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful
slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted
you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”

  • Prayer is directed to the Father.
    John 16:23 NLT
At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you
the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant
your request because you use my name.
    Matthew 6:6 MSG
“Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place
so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be
there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus
will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his
    grace.”
  1. The PRIORITY of Prayer – “Hallowed be your name.”
  • Prayer is HUMBLING ourselves in reverence to our holy
    God.
  1. The PLANS of Prayer – “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be
done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
  • Our prayers are often filled with our kingdoms, our
    PLANS, and our causes.
  • Prayer is not asking God to do our will . . . . It is bringing
our lives into CONFORMITY with His plan and will.
    Psalms 139:16 NLT
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was
recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a
    single day had passed.
    Psalms 37:23 NLT
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every
    detail of their lives.
  • Romans 12:2 NLT
  • . . . . let God transform you into a new person by changing
  • the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for
  • you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
  • Many times, prayer will change US more than it changes
    our circumstances.
    James 1:17 NLT
Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from
God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He
never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
    2 Peter 1:3 NLT
By his divine power, God has given us everything we need
for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming
to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of
    his marvelous glory and excellence.
  • The PROVISION of Prayer – “Give us this day our daily
    bread.”
    Philippians 4:19 NLT
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your
needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us
    in Christ Jesus.
  • Prayer builds a RELIANCE upon God and not on us.
    1 John 4:4 NLT
But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already
won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives
in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.
  • The PARDON of Prayer – “And forgive us our debts, as
    we forgive our debtors.”
Matthew 6:14-15 NLT If you forgive those who sin against
you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.15 But if you refuse
to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.
  • Prayer is about daily lightening our LOAD.
  1. The PROTECTION of Prayer – “And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
James 1:13-14 NLT And remember, when you are being
tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never
tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone
else. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which
entice us and drag us away.
  • Prayer is a time for us to be VULNERABLE about
    temptations we are facing.
Hebrews 4:15-16 MSG This High Priest (Jesus) of ours
understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same
testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to
the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his
mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it
    most.
  • Prayer is about maintaining our ATTACHMENT to Christ
    versus an attachment to sin.
John 15:4-5 NLT Remain in me, and I will remain in you.
For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the
vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who
remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart
from me you can do nothing.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT The temptations in your life are
no different from what others experience. And God is faithful.
He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can
stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so
    that you can endure.
Prayer is only as good as God is.
Since He is good, so is prayer.
    Prayer works because He does.
Prayer changes things because God changes things.
Prayer makes a difference because God has determined to
    make a difference.

Prayer matters because you matter to God!
