John 19:28 NLT
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill
Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”
Jesus lived His life on purpose.
Everything He said was calculated.
John 19:29-30 NLT
29 A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in
it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. 30 When
Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his
head and gave up his spirit.
Jesus precisely fulfilled ancient prophecies on the cross.
Exodus 17:2. 6 NLT
2 So once more the people complained against Moses. “Give us
water to drink!” they demanded.
6 So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out
as the elders looked on.
The Spirit of the Lord, through Moses, led them to an area where
they could drink, it would come out of a rock. The Rock of all
Ages is Jesus.
When Jesus said, “I thirst” – he reminded every Jewish person
who knew the OT scriptures and stories – “The One who satisfied
your thirst in the wilderness is the same One who is dying on the
cross before you.”
“My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth…they have pierced my
hands and feet…they put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for
my thirst.” (Psalm 22:15-16; 69:21)
Matthew 5:6 NIV
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for
they will be filled.
He thirsts, so that I can be satisfied.
John 4:10, 13-15 NLT
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is
that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would
have given you living water.” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who
drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the
water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them
will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t
get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
The real thirst of Jesus is actually that we would receive His life
and that we would become life-giving people, that we would learn
how to give life to others.
Jesus endured the torture of hell so I can enjoy the
treasures of heaven!
Luke 16:24 NLT
“The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send
Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my
tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’
We are all fallen men and women, and Jesus is the Lamb of God
who was “pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our
iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5 NIV).
He cried, “I thirst” so we can hear the words of the last invitation
found on the last page of our Bible, Let anyone who is thirsty
come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of
life.(Revelation 22:17 NLT)
Ask God to make you hunger and thirst for Him
