God made us spirit, soul, and body. God created our spirits to relate to Him. Through Jesus, we have the finished work of grace in our spirits and the progressive work of grace in our souls. Transformation happens when we let the Word change our souls.
1. The soul is selfish.
God created our bodies, and when He breathed His Spirit into us, we became living souls. God created our spirits to relate to Him, and He created our souls to relate to Him and His creation. When Adam and Eve sinned, their spirits died. They began to relate to God only through their souls. When we are born again, our spirits are made alive, and we can relate to God spirit to spirit.
2. The soul must submit to the spirit.
Your soul has been living longer than your spirit, since your spirit was born (came alive) when you got saved. The soul resists when the spirit comes alive and wants to take over. We are feeding either our soul or our spirit by what we read, look at, or listen to.
3. The soul must die.
What we think, want, and feel doesn’t matter. It’s what the Word of God says that matters. The Word of God divides between what we think, want, and feel and what God thinks, wants, and feels. The Word of God is like a sword. God wants to kill selfish thoughts, desires, and feelings that are killing you. We must pick up our cross daily to have victory. This happens when we let the Word transform our souls.
